Change in American Society

Are such changes impossible under American capitalism or are they likely results of just such a system? What human tendencies underlie the sort of world described by Vonnegut? Are these the end results of the progressive spread of middle class greed, envy, and pettiness? What does the experience of America in the late twentieth century suggest? What does the popularity of shows like Oprah's and Rosie O'Donnell's hint at? Why are such figures role models? What is given center stage in such shows? What about Barbie dolls redesigned to look more like "real" people? How about certain trends in elementary/secondary and even higher education (e.g. grade inflation)? What of practices in organized sports for youth such as giving equal playing time regardless of ability, of not keeping score (and acting as if one didn't know what the score was); of giving medals to players on teams regardless of how they finished in their league?

Of course, the times they are a'changin'. Ask Bob Dylan. The down side is that we, as people, have a difficult time in deciding what kind of change will be brought about.
However, what we can do is assure that the change be for the better and for the common interest of the people.

A somewhat recent statistic showed that 80%-90% of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction. SO, obviously, we haven't been running the country according to what our better interests are.

The Ameircan middle-class is being murdered. Despite that, their moral corruption won't stop criss crossing the country. Why the still vote according to geography still baffles me.

If you are suffering because of a broken politics in a country, you don't vote to keep getting pushed down because politicians don't care about you.

This blunder in the United States political process has cost the election for the candidates who actually would help end the suffering several times.

It's called the American because you have to be asleep to believe it.

Equality will never be achieved under capitalism because not everyone can invest in something and still get the same amount of money back. In the US in this book people are all average and such are handicapped or left alone, by the level of their different skills and appearences.

As usual someone in this society will become greedy and want to take off their handicaps and to just be free unlike anyone else. This is the real human spirit. To do what you want and to feel in control of your life.

People need to learn that if equality goes to every single aspect then life would be dull and uneventful. If everyone on a sports team got a medal there would be no fun in trying to get it if you know you would already get one.

The true nature of the human spirit wouldn't allow a change like this in life because there would always be someone who wanted more.
