Equality Achieved

What is the state of U.S. society as described in the first paragraph of the story? How has “equality” been achieved?

An equal society in every way.
¨Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody wa better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stonger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due t the 211th,212th, and 213th Amendments to the constitution, and the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.¨
- Kurt Vonnegut ¨Harrison Bergeron¨ (1961)

equality, has been achived in the way that no one thought any more smarter that anyone else. no one was pretier that anyonee. and if they were then the would have to wear a mask.

I think that equality was not achieved because some people were being tortured while the rest of the people stared blankly at everyone else and not being able to use their brains like they should.

Equality was supposedly achieved by the govt. Thanks to their close vigilance on everyone , not letting anyone be prettier or smarter or stronger than anyone else that it was even a law the 211th,212th and 213th Ammendments were all about that.

The Equal society is a world were no one is able to use their identities, basically they are All treated as Zombies :S. Nobody was able to be superior at something than others, and if they tried to be superior, then they would go to prisonor or suffer worser consequences.

I agree with Ryan that equality was not achieved because some people were tortured and abused while the rest were not. However; there was some equality in the sense that everybody's abilities and appearance were at the same level.

Supposedly, equality had FINALLY reached the United States with some Handicapper General and some weird Amendments. The reality, this satire is used mockingly by Kurt Vonnegut because he knows that a politics has come to the United States that has divided the country and made everyone hate each other based on stupid differences.
However, politicians have wrapped themselves in charisma so that people actually think they have a point. They don't, the never will, we will never be open enough to accept 'equality'.

The state of U.S. society as described in the first paragraph of society is that everyone is finally equal. This "equality" has been achieved by making everybody having the same level of mediocrity in every aspect. The Handicappers General is the organization that helps keep things the way they are. With the use of devices, such as buzzers in smart people's ears, masks on beautiful people, and weights on strong people, everyone has the same capabilities and hence there is equality.

How in the world can anyone imagine that equality is being achieved here? Is not equality supposed to be fair? Now tell me, is it fair to have to cary extra weight, constantly hear tremendous noise, have to wear hideous masks and such other barbarities really making people equal?
Yes some people wich would have had problems in society were finally given a chance, but is it really fair to be made equal by taking away the talents or the brilliant and beautiful so that other may feel better?
This U.S. government and their watchful handicapper general where what where supposed to be maintaining equality bu making sure that no one was better than the rest.
But then equality is not achieved because it is not our fault that some people may have some difficulties and are not gifted. These differences make up the world. Equality cannot be achieved. Only if you really think that it is equal to have to carry extra weight, a horrid mask and hear torturing noises just because you are too pretty, too athletic or too smart. Then equality in this society was indeed achieved.

Equality is achieved in this society by making every human being dull, stupid and not unique; just a monogamous society.

They have given handicaps to all the people who the government believes will prevail in life more than others. The handicaps make all the citizens of the society equal because they all have one handicap or another. Even if there would be a "future Einstein," there would be no law/equation of energy in this society, precisely because of the handicaps given.

Yes equality has been achieved. But with this equality has come close vigilance on all people at all times and something verging on a dictatorship. The US is built on the thought of freedom. Freedom of speech, religion, petition, all of these are what the US represent. This world of so called equality isn't a life. It is ignorance and brainwashing. After being told to wear these handicaps and being reprimanded for not, the lesson has set in.

The state of U.S. society is that everyone is equal. There are nobody that is smarter than anybody else, or a better looking, etc. The equality probably would have been achieved by the government by putting handicaps to people that are better than others. That way, the people that are worse, they might make them feel better. But it is unfair for the people that are better.

Equality is achieved because the people who are supirior have a little chip inside their brain that does not allow them to do or act in any suprior way. The "normal" people just forget about normal things like the reason for crying.
