The Future

What are the implications of the opening sentence, "The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal" (7)? What happened? Are capitalism and American democracy dead? Did Soviet-style totalitarianism finally prevail? What does the elimination of advantages, difference, and competition suggest concerning the nature of the changes that have taken place?

The opening sentence "The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal" (7)? Tells us that this society is very different than ours and that rules and laws are also going to be different. This type of government is basically in my opinion, totalitarianism. This shows because there are people that are runnning the whole govt. and they do not allow people to have their own say in anything they do. They control evry aspect of their life, culture, the way they speak or act and how they live their life.

It means that supposely everyone is suppose to be all alike in a natural and average way. It also tells us about the gov. completely changed, because how comes now no one has any differences? It is also like a type of dictator ship, cause only one person gov. the whole world basically, and that person thinks is god. That government doesn't let peoples vote be considerated, but only the gov.'s opinion.

"The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal." Seems to be mocking the society we have now which is supposed to be fighting for equality. It is like if the author of this story is showing that true equality can never be accomplished and showing his own idea about the way in wuich equality can be achieved. This really could be the future because there are enough people in the world that are trully willing to do anything to obtain equality. Even if it means letting the government control your life for you. That is the only reason why communism has been able to take control various times. And who knows, maybe it might become strong enough as to have absolute control when "the year is 2081, and everyone is finally equal."

What the author ment by being "equal" is that everyone was equal because the progedies would be handicapped to become avarage. There were no more politics, the only answer was handicaps. The only way to keep society settled and equal werer the handicaps.

"The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal" is a strong statement saying that society there was equal. If this was true, the laws would be extremely different from today. Everything is controlled by the government. If no one noticed the government, it would seem that Marxism-Communism had won. But in the context, the reader sees totalitarianism. Democracy seems to have fallen against this fight for power. In this society, this is "equality". But to us, we see how the more gifted are handicapped and controlled by the government. This is totalitarianism.

My question is, who gets to decide what goes on in this society? Is it really totalitarianism or is it an oligarchy or a monarchy? What gives them the privilege to do these actions.

The opening sentence is used to explain to the readers that in that epoch or year the rules and the laws have changed and that no one is going to feel unequal ever again. it shows a new type of government emerging where human freedom is somehow restricted to create equality..

This oppening sentence obviously seeks to criticize the society we live in now. It is also making clear that everything has changed. The society was now equal but the liberties were lost. Democracy had ended, nobody had a valid opinion and the way of life of each individual was already determined.
